We Scaled the World’s Most Dangerous Peak
During the 1953 American expedition to climb K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, one pioneering mountaineer didn’t mince words about the peak: “It’s a savage mountain that tries to kill you.” Nicknamed the “Savage Mountain” thereafter, K2 is considered the toughest and most dangerous mountain on Earth. Only about 400 climbers have bested this crag, which is also known as “the King of the Mountains” and “the Mountain of Mountains.”
Located on the border of China and Pakistan, K2 puts climbers through a gauntlet of challenges. Extreme high altitude. One-third the amount of oxygen as sea level. Extreme storms. Steep exposed routes that make retreat during a storm incredibly difficult. More than 90 deaths have been cataloged by climbers who attempted this difficult and dangerous ascent.
Undaunted by these challenges, we set off to this imposing crag on a mission: to bring back K2 granite and put it in a ring. As rare, rugged and unique as the place that birthed it, K2 granite has been called “one of the world’s most interesting rocks” by Geology.com. With bright white granite interrupted by azurite orbs and flecks of black and green, your eye can’t help but be drawn to this magnificent stone. By setting this rare stone in a masculine ring of oxidized .925 sterling silver, the K2 Granite Ring is a daring addition to any man’s collection. This is the kind of men’s jewelry that tells the world “Go big, or go home.”
